Sub Team

What is the Sub Team

The Sub Team was created to allow teams an opportunity to avoid forfeits by getting more players when their team is short for a game. Teams can request up to 3 subs for a total of no more than 13 players, or more than 3 subs for a total of no more than 12 players participating in the game. It is free to join and can give players an opportunity to pick up extra games.

We will be using a League Apps Chat for coordinating sub requests. Team Reps will need to sign up so they can request subs through a Sub Team “Chat” that they will see in their League Apps mobile app.  Everyone registered for the Sub Team will need to download the mobile app, which is available in the Apple and Android app stores, in order to participate. If a Team Rep is technologically challenged (as in a SCIF all day or is a teacher and cannot be looking at their phone) and chooses not to be the team's sub pool requestor, please let the Sub Coordinator know as soon as possible.

How Team Reps (or their designee's) Use the Sub Team Chat:

  • When posting for sub(s), the chat message MUST include the DATE, TIME, NAME of the TEAM, FIELD LOCATION, the number of subs you are seeking, and shirt color. This should be contained in ONE post. (For example - "Purple Reign is seeking 3 subs for Saturday, September 14 at 11:20am, on Woodson Aux. Please wear purple.")
  • If, say 3 players (Mary, Jane, and Carla) all say they can sub for Purple Reign at 11:20am on the 14th at Woodson and confirm they will bring a purple shirt, then the next step is to for the Team Rep (or the designee) to confirm.
  • When responding to the sub chat, give sufficient time to get responses and once you have all your subs, thank them by name (For example - “Thank you, Mary, Jane, and Carla. You are our 3 subs. See you on Saturday, September 14 at 11:20am on Woodson Aux in purple.”)
  • If you do not get your required number of subs, please reach out to the Sub Team Commissioner by email at subs@fwsasoccer.org to make arrangements to post in a different age group (older age group) to see if you can get someone to help.

How Players Join the Sub Teams

Go into your League Apps account (the same account you used when you registered). Scroll to the bottom of the page and sign up for all the Sub Teams for which you are age eligible and that you wish to participate in. You will also need to download the League Apps mobile app, which is available in the Apple and Android stores for your mobile device. Players must register for the Sub Teams each season, they do not carry over to the next season. If you have never played in our league, you get one (1) free season in the Sub Team to try out the league. After this initial free season, you must be a registered player to sign up as a sub.

When responding to the requests for subs, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Responses MUST include the name of the team, game date and time. (For example - "Mary can sub for Purple Reign on 9/14 at 11:20am on Woodson Aux. I'll bring a purple shirt"). Be specific, do not respond with simply “I can play,” as that can be unclear when there are multiple teams requesting subs in the chat.
  • Responses should only be for unfulfilled sub requests. Do not respond as a back-up or “in case you need another sub” after a team has gotten all their requested subs.
  • Please keep conversations to a minimum. If you need to ask a question, feel free to email the Sub Team Commissioner at subs@fwsasoccer.org who can put you in touch with the team rep for the game or the DC for the division.

Sub Team Usage Notes:

  • Teams can request up to 3 subs for a total of no more than 13 players, or more than 3 subs for no more than 12 players (regular team members plus subs) participating in the game. These 12 or 13 (or less) players are the only ones who may play on the field for the entire game. No additional players may join the game, nor may team members who show up unexpectedly be substituted in for any of the original 12 or 13 players.
  • Be sure your team members are aware of how many regular team members and subs are included in your game-day numbers. Teams playing with more than the number of allowed players are in violation of the roster rule and will forfeit the game.
  • Subs are placed in the order that they are received.
  • Subs should be given the option of playing as much as they feel comfortable playing and in the position that they choose.
  • If needed, the team will provide the sub with a jersey to wear for the game.
  • Players may only sub for one game per day.
  • Please only reply with positive responses or questions to sub requests, and keep chat traffic to a minimum - remember EVERYONE on the Sub Team gets these chat messages. The more messages on the Sub Team chat, the more people will become confused and/or annoyed with the number of messages and could possibly stop paying attention to them. If players are ignoring the messages, teams are not going to get subs.
  • Team Reps should notify the Sub Team Commissioner if any sub fails to show up with no prior notification. That sub will then be warned and if it happens again, she will be removed from the Sub Team(s) for the rest of the season.
  • Please make every effort to request subs only when in need. Rescinding a sub request, while not prohibited in the rules, causes confusion and is highly discouraged. Also, be aware that if the sub does not get your "rescinding" message and shows up at the game, the sub must play and any player beyond the allowed number cannot play.
  • PLEASE NOTE that players must be registered for the Sub Team in order to play – if the player does not see the Sub Team on their League Apps, then they are not yet registered and are considered an illegal player if they show up to the field and join a game.
